Overview

Total daily energy expenditure, or TDEE, is an estimate of the energy your body uses in a typical day. It includes the energy required to keep you alive, movement from daily activities, planned exercise, and the energy involved in digesting food.

Your TDEE is different from your basal metabolic rate (BMR). BMR is an estimate of the calories your body needs at rest under controlled conditions. TDEE builds on that estimate by accounting for activity. In simple terms:

TDEE = BMR × activity factor

A TDEE calculator can help answer “how many calories should I eat?” but it does not produce a perfect number. It provides a starting estimate. Your actual needs can vary with body composition, exercise intensity, occupation, sleep, stress, appetite, and changes in everyday movement.

How to estimate your TDEE

One commonly used approach first estimates BMR with the Mifflin–St Jeor equation. Enter your body weight in kilograms, height in centimeters, and age in years.

For males: BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) + 5

For females: BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) − (5 × age) − 161

Next, multiply BMR by an activity factor. These factors are useful categories, not precise measurements:

  • 1.2: Mostly sedentary, with little planned exercise
  • 1.375: Light activity, such as regular easy exercise or a generally active routine
  • 1.55: Moderate activity, such as structured training several days per week
  • 1.725: High activity, combining frequent training with an active lifestyle
  • 1.9: Very high activity, usually involving demanding training or physically active work

For example, if your estimated BMR is 1,600 calories and you select an activity factor of 1.55, the calculation is:

1,600 × 1.55 = 2,480 calories per day

If you use pounds and inches, convert them before applying the metric equations: kilograms equal pounds divided by 2.205, and centimeters equal inches multiplied by 2.54.

Activity level is the input most likely to be overestimated. Consider your whole week, not only gym sessions. Someone who exercises three times weekly but sits for most of the day may need a lower category than someone with the same workouts who walks, stands, or performs physical work throughout the day. When uncertain, choose the lower reasonable category and adjust after observing your weight trend.

The estimate also assumes that your reported sex category is appropriate for the equation you are using. People who are nonbinary, transgender, highly muscular, older, or living with medical conditions may find that a standard equation does not fit well. Do not confuse TDEE with a guarantee of weight change. Food labels, portion estimates, water retention, digestion, and daily movement all introduce uncertainty. Body weight can also fluctuate for reasons unrelated to fat gain or loss. Look at a multi-week trend rather than reacting to one weigh-in.

Worked examples

Example 1: estimating maintenance calories

Suppose a 35-year-old female weighs 70 kilograms and is 165 centimeters tall. Her estimated BMR is:

(10 × 70) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 35) − 161 = approximately 1,410 calories

If she selects a moderate activity factor of 1.55:

1,410 × 1.55 = approximately 2,185 calories per day

She could use roughly 2,185 calories as an initial maintenance estimate, then compare it with her weight trend over several weeks. If weight is stable and the goal is maintenance, the estimate is reasonably aligned with her observed needs.

Example 2: setting a gradual fat-loss target

Using the same estimated maintenance level, she might test a modest reduction rather than making a drastic change. For example, reducing daily intake by approximately 250 to 400 calories would create a starting target in the range of about 1,785 to 1,935 calories. The appropriate choice depends on hunger, training, health history, food preferences, and progress.

After tracking consistently, she can adjust the target based on the trend. If there is no meaningful change after several weeks and logging is reasonably accurate, a small adjustment or increase in daily movement may be appropriate. Example 3: why activity changes matter

Someone may calculate a TDEE while training five days per week, then change to a desk-based routine because of travel, illness, or an injury. The original number may no longer represent current needs. The same applies in reverse when someone begins a consistent home workout plan, walks more, or starts a physically active job.

When to recalculate

Recalculate your TDEE when an important input changes, not every time the scale moves. Useful triggers include a meaningful change in body weight, a new training schedule, a different job or daily routine, or a sustained change in activity. Revisit the estimate after completing a planned fat-loss phase or when returning to maintenance.

A practical review process is:

  1. Record your current weight, age, height, and usual weekly activity.
  2. Calculate a new estimated TDEE and choose a moderate goal based on your priorities.
  3. Follow the target consistently while keeping meals, activity, and weigh-ins as consistent as reasonably possible.
  4. Review the average weight trend after several weeks rather than judging individual days.
  5. Adjust calories modestly if the trend and goal do not match, then allow time to observe the result.
